Detection of HPV DNA in SCC and Bowen's Disease by PCR

Abstract
In order to evaluate the role of human papillomavirus(HPV) in the development of premalignant lesions and cancers of the skin, 24 paraffin-embedded biopsy specimens obtained from 12 patients with squamous cell carcinoma(SCC) and 9 patients with
Bowen's
disease(BD) of the genital and hand/foot areas were analyzed by the polymerase chain reaction. HPV DNA sequences were detected in 16 specimens(66.7%): 4(66.7%) of 6 genital SCC, 3(50%) of 6 hand/foot SCC, 4(57.1%) of 7 genital BD and all 5(100%)
of
hand/foot BD. HPV DNA sequences, mostly HPV 16, were detected in 14(87.5%) of 16 specimens of positive amplified PCR products.
These results strongly suggest that specific HPV type, HPV-16, play an important role in the development of squamous cell carcinomas and Bowen's diseases at the genital and hand/foot areas.
